How HTML5-coded DOOH ads bring live events to audiences in real time

How do you make engaging ads in 2026? You make them responsive.

Follow someone around for a day and you’ll see just how much change there is in a city on a daily basis.

  • The morning commute gives way to a heaving town-square lunchtime crowd.
  • It suddenly starts bucketing with rain.
  • A football match goes into extra time.
  • A festival runs a bit behind schedule after one act enjoys the limelight a bit too much.
  • A product teased by influencers for weeks across TikTok and Instagram suddenly drops at your local drugstore.

Most advertising will react to these events later. But Digital out-of-home? It can respond during them.

HTML5-coded DOOH is one of the most powerful innovations for modern advertising. It allows you to make advertising dynamic. And when you’re able to make advertising dynamic, you can make it responsive. By setting up your ads via trusted sources and APIs, your campaign can react to live data almost immediately.

  • Countdowns reach zero
  • messages become more urgent to reflect availability
  • the color changes based on weather updates
  • a live score updates as soon as it happens…

You name it.

And the most magical thing? To the people viewing it as they pass by, your ad doesn’t fade into the background, hoping for a glance. Rather, it carves a space in the moment and feels alive.

For brands, DOOH and HTML5 can help you stop having conversations about endless variants of the same creative, and instead about designing campaigns flexible enough to reflect the real world around us.

In this post, I’ll let you know how HTML5-coded DOOH really earns its keep in modern advertising – not just in being technically impressive, but in its ability to keep your advertising relevant through different trend cycles well after launch.

What are HTML5-coded DOOH ads?

HTML5-coded DOOH ads aren’t a still image, like a static JPEG or PNG. They’re also not a type of video that requires a complete overhaul whenever something changes (thankfully).

Most often, you’ll find HTML5-coded DOOH ads in the wild as countdowns to dates or events, live scores from sports matches, weather information, stock availability, directions or schedules.

Thankfully, those clever updates aren’t made by someone sitting behind their computer all day, refreshing their weather app and furiously coding in real-time. Rather, HTML5-sourced ads are created using coding, typically HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The coding allows elements in the ad to respond based on external data sources.

Think of them as a frame that you can place design elements on which update what’s shown based on a pre-defined set of rules.

But the way DOOH works really changes how you plan campaigns. Instead of asking how many versions of an advert you need, you plan it around ‘how should this update when something changes?’

That, in and of itself, is really exciting. You open the door to so many more possibilities.

  • A sports sponsor can respond to a goal
  • A retailer can switch from ‘coming soon’ to ‘in a store near you!’
  • An event planner can update schedules and times for different acts without updating their designs

HTML5-coded DOOH enables all that.

Responsive doesn’t have to mean interactive

Now, I might say something a bit contradictory here, but it’s a common misconception for HTML5 that every campaign needs to be interactive.

In my experience creating DOOH assets in public spaces, that’s not the case.

You can’t expect people to always stop by and tap on a screen in the middle of a station, or outside a shopping center.

Rather, the creative needs to blend into the experience of its surroundings. Think of the examples I shared earlier: the temperature suddenly climbs, and you see an ad for an ice-cold bottle of beer. It’s rush hour, and you promote an addictive puzzle game they can download and play for free during their commute.

These ads are a much better fit for public spaces because they allow your ads to feel connected to what’s happening without demanding attention just for being there.

Why live data matters

Being able to connect data to your ad campaigns might not be news to you. But, what’s changing is how confidently other brands are doing it.

Programmatic buying makes it easier to activate campaigns to a time, place, and audience. But advertisers are adapting their creative more and more, instead of signing off on it and moving on to the next idea.

The ability to update ads in response to live information isn’t a new concept. It’s one that brands have been doing for years. What is new, however, is how brands are incorporating it into their campaigns.

I’d be lying if I said I felt like every campaign needs a live data feed. Some don’t benefit from live data, and adding cool tech just because it’s there will just overcomplicate things more than they  need to be.

The better question – and something experienced folk can help you answer – is when live data genuinely improves the experience.

  • Does a countdown build suspense and anticipation?
  • Does a weather trigger invite the right feeling?
  • Would shoppers care if this item is low in stock?

If so, it’s worth exploring how live data can be part of your creative campaigns, instead of just being there for the sake of it.

This is where HTML5-coded DOOH really shines in helping your campaigns turn into experiences.

Where HTML5-coded DOOH makes the biggest difference

The campaigns that work best have one thing in common: they’re tied to moments that matter to us. I’ll go over a few examples here.

HTML5 and DOOH in Sport

Sport is probably the easiest example, because the audience already expects information to be updated in real time.

Nobody bats an eyelid at a changing score, or a leaderboard being refreshed, or a clock counting down to the end of the game.

Responsive DOOH simply brings that same experience to a different medium.

Before kick-off, screens could be used to count down to the start, or show information about the players. Once the game is on, you can show live updates, or react to important moments in the match, or change sponsor messages when the final score is confirmed.

It doesn’t work on the audience because it’s technically impressive – it works because it reflects something the audience cares about. It doesn’t interrupt or try to take attention away from the event – it becomes part of it.

HTML5 and DOOH for Festivals and Events

If you’ve ever organised an event for a big group of people (like a festival), you’ll know that you’ll be lucky if everything sticks perfectly to schedule.

After all, sets go on too long, crowds come and go, and people queue for events that are seriously delayed or cancelled.

Static screens can’t react to these changes, but digital ones can!

That doesn’t mean that every screen should turn into a live news ticker. Rather, the information on them can be updated to reflect the most important changes. It’s about being helpful, not getting in the way.

If the festival is busy, the screens can be used to direct people to less crowded entrances, or to remind them what’s playing next.

You can use your same branding, same tone of voice, but a slightly different message to let people know they’re being guided.

It’s a subtle change, but super impactful. Screens like that in a festival setting stick with you, because they help solve small problems while exposing and reinforcing your core brand message.

HTML5 and DOOH for Retail and Product launches

Retail is an interesting one, because it’s all about timing.

Creative is often signed off weeks (or even months) before launch, but the conditions it’s launched under can change multiple times in a single day.

Stocks sell out, deliveries arrive early, sizes run out, promotions end…

A responsive HTML5 campaign can make life easier for everyone involved by only needing to be changed when conditions change.

Rather than designing ten variations of the same campaign, your team can design one piece of responsive creative that behaves differently when certain conditions are met.

  • When stock levels reach a certain point, the message changes.
  • When a product launch starts, the countdown disappears.
  • When a promotion ends, the offer is updated.

HTML5-coded DOOH offers you that flexibility.

Localising with HTML5 and DOOH

Some of the most interesting responsive creative doesn’t focus on a single huge event, but rather a series of small changes in the local environment.

  • A coffee promotion that only appears when it’s cold outside.
  • A travel brand counting down to the next bank holiday weekend.
  • A retailer updates its message depending on the opening times of its stores.
  • An event sponsor changes its creative depending on which entrance the viewer is approaching from.

None of these ideas on their own are particularly revolutionary, but combined they create a much more interesting experience for the audience.

That’s the real point of responsive DOOH: it makes outdoor media more aware of its surroundings, and therefore more valuable.

How to build HTML5 DOOH ads

A dynamic HTML5 DOOH campaign usually has five parts:

  1. A data source

This could be a sports feed, weather API, event schedule, stock system, countdown timer or approved content feed.
  2. Creative rules

These decide what the ad should show when certain conditions are met. For example: “If the temperature is above 25°C, show summer creative” or “If Team A scores, display the goal message.”
  3. An HTML5 creative template

The template contains the design, animation and layout. It’s built to pull in the right data and display it clearly on the screen.
  4. Platform and screen specifications

DOOH environments have technical requirements around dimensions, file weight, animation length, refresh behaviour, hosting, connectivity and approval. These need to be considered early (and not at the end!)
  5. Fallback states

Every live campaign needs a safe default. If a feed is delayed, unavailable or returns unexpected data, the ad should still display a polished, approved message.

A strong campaign needs both a good concept and careful technical production. The idea has to be exciting, but the execution also has to be stable, compliant and easy to manage.

What to plan before building a dynamic DOOH campaign

It’s easy to assume that the most difficult part is writing the clever code that makes the magic happen. It’s actually the other way around!

The most challenging conversations usually happen before anyone starts building.

  • What triggers which changes?
  • How many variations are there?
  • What can we legally use?
  • What should the campaign do if a particular feed isn’t updating?
  • Who approves the different versions?
  • Can they all be signed off in the same way, or do they need separate approval?
  • What happens if the data fails?

These are all much more important questions than they might seem, and they’re all much harder to answer than most people expect.

To get the most from HTML5 DOOH ads, start with the strategy before the technology. Captivate’s 2026 DOOH media planning guidance makes a similar point: strong campaigns connect objective, placement, reach, frequency, creative and measurement into one system.

That’s why the most effective responsive campaigns are often surprisingly simple.

Measurement does not have to rely on one metric. Depending on the campaign, teams might look at brand lift, footfall, QR scans, search uplift, website visits, social engagement, store visits or sales signals.

The key is making sure all the difficult planning and strategic work has already been done before anyone sees the finished creative.

The future of live event advertising is responsive

The best live event campaigns do more than place a logo next to a moment. They understand the energy of that moment and add something relevant to it.

HTML5-coded DOOH ads make that possible at scale. You can build creative that responds to events in real-time.

It’s a win-win, too. For audiences, these ads connect and amplify the experience they’re already having. For brands and agencies, they create a way to build campaigns that are timely, flexible and future-ready.

So, instead of “What should we put on this billboard?”, try asking your team “How can our billboard be a living part of the experience?
